Padmapriya Janakiraman, popularly known as Priya, is an actress in Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi film cinema known for her classical dancing skills.
She is a Tamil Brahmin born in Delhi and brought up in Punjab. Her father was in the army and has lived all over India. She is an established actress in South Indian cinema.
Though her first film was in Telugu Seenu Vasanthi Lakshmi, she completed her MBA before entering films in a big way. She has also won Ms Andhra Pradesh in 2001 and is also a trained make-up artist and hair stylist.
It was Blessy who gave her a dream break in the Malayalam film Kaazha. It was Padmapriya's second film in which she was acting opposite the great Mammotty. She matched the great actor and won many hearts. She got to do many Malayalam films where she acted with all the superstars such as Mammootty, Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi and Jayaram. And this paved way for her to try out Tamil films.
She was introduced in Tamil by Cheran in Thavamai Thavamirundhu. There has been no looking back since. She managed to bag great roles in films like Satham Podaathey and Pattiyal and a whole range of other Tamil films. Today, she is a busy star in Tamil and Malayalam films. She is also doing a Hindi film titled Striker opposite Siddarth and directed by Chandan Arora.
Before films beckoned to her, she was working with GE Capital as a risk consultant in Bangalore and Gurgaon. After GE, she was with Symphony in Bangalore.
Over the years, she has grown up to be a vibrant dansuese under the guidance of the famous guru Natya Brahma VS Ramamurthy. She has over 200 public performances to her credit. Her Krishna Leela Ballet, where she performed the role of Lord Krishna for Hyderabad Doordarshan in 1990 is telecast even today on almost all Krishna Jayanti festivals and was specially chosen for the SAARC exchange program.
She is also a trained make-up artist and hair stylist. It was very refreshing to see Padma come up and voluntarily hair dress her competitors Kavya Madhavan and Navya Nair during the Dubai Star show in 2007.
She eventually wants to start an institution of dance where can teach free of cost. She loves reading, travelling, cooking and swimming among others. Incidentally, Padmapriya is a pure vegetarian and loves South Indian food.
